Hi, My Mum Did NOT Book My Appointment

Written by Anushka Vineet

Hi, I have an appointment today I, ME [INSERT YOUR NAME], booked the appointment all by myself. I will take a seat, but first, I’m so proud of myself and my mum is too.

It can be overwhelming being an adult, now responsible for basically every element of your life. Especially if you, like a sizeable proportion of the ANU population, have left behind the comfort of home and now face the dreaded task of booking your own appointments.

Don’t worry though, Observer is here to be your resident big sibling and introduce you to the medical services at your disposal!

Tucked away on Level 2 of the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Kambri is the ANU Medical Centre. Here you can find a variety of services offered by the university to meet all your health needs.

Have you been a bit too overzealous in the kitchen, perhaps a little silly with your knife? The experienced team can help with “minor surgical procedures and [your] wound management” needs. They are also equipped if you are due for a general check-up or want to alleviate that lingering freshers’ flu hack.

Have a backpacking trip planned over the winter break in a country that you chose straight from an Instagram Reel? Without providing medical advice, because at Observer we are not qualified, you can have a chat with the doctors at ANU Medical about the latest travel advice and vaccinations for your next trip.

With the Canberra chill imminent, ANU Medical is providing free flu vaccinations to all ANU staff and students. You can book your free jab here via the HotDoc platform.

ANU Medical is also one of the only places in Canberra where you can access free STI testing. With their fully confidential service, you do not have to stray far to access sexual health advice from a dedicated professional team.

If you are a student who has Medicare, all appointments with ANU Medical team are bulk-billed, a rarity in Canberra. You can book an appointment with any of the ANU Medical Team professionals here.

If you need more specialised mental health support, there are two avenues offered on campus.

The ANU Counselling Centre offers a “free, short-term, confidential and non-diagnostic service” to all ANU students who are enrolled in Australia. Students do not need a referral or a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a General Practitioner. You can register for appointments here.

On campus, there is also a dedicated psychologist service, called the ANU Psychology Clinic. It is a dedicated treatment and research centre which offers specialised psychological services to ANU students. Their services include individual therapy, group programs, and cognitive assessments.

Finally, if you need to dispense your prescriptions or urgently need to replace your toothbrush, you can visit University Pharmacy ANU. Conveniently located underneath ANU Medical Centre, the team are very friendly and can offer all your pharmaceutical needs. They are even part of an ACT Trial, where, in certain situations, they can prescribe Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Medication over the counter.

Observer reminds you that if you are ever requiring urgent medical care, please do not hesitate to ring emergency services at 000.
