The ANUSA Election is coming up, with voting opening on Monday 22 September and closing Friday 25 September. There are 58 positions up for election, from ANUSA President to General Representatives.
Here, Observer focuses on the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and General Secretary, briefly looking at the tickets with candidates running for these positions, as well as the individual candidates.
The Tickets You Need to Know For These Key Positions
There are countless tickets on the ANUSA ballot, but only five have members running for the four highlighted positions. It is worth noting that not all candidates belong to a ticket, and run categorised as ‘ungrouped.’
These ticket descriptions are organised in alphabetical order.
‘Keep Em’ Honest – Roche for ANUSA’
Will Roche, the individual candidate on the ticket, says he wants to “enact realistic reform that is going to guarantee that the Union [ANUSA] is a helpful and valuable part of university life.” This includes doubling the ‘clubs funding’ pool, using his potential role on the University Council to create the option for Zoom tutorials, and “launch[ing] a full ANUSA spending review” including efforts to reduce ANUSA’s administrative expenses.
‘Malakai for ANUSA’
Malakai King, the individual member on the ticket, states he will create a public decisions register for ANUSA, renew and update the Student Partnership Agreement (SPA), and improve training for ANUSA Department Committees. He also plans to establish a one-day summit during the mid-semester break in Semester 1 break for “workshops, training sessions, networking, and organising.”
‘No Cuts at ANU – Students For Palestine’
‘No Cuts at ANU – Students for Palestine’ describe themselves as “anti-capitalist activists running to turn ANUSA into an activist union.” They aim to “fight for a free education” and “fight for a free Palestine”. They call the priorities of ANUSA executives in 2025 “appalling”, stating “we want an ANUSA that isn’t afraid to use the protest power students have.”
‘RAGE for ANUSA’
‘RAGE for ANUSA’ says they will create emergency flight grants for international and regional students, upgrade the Brian Kenyon Student Space (BKSS), introduce reproductive and health leave from tutorials, and increase the number of gigs on campus. They will also continue to “fight the cuts at all levels.”
‘Strange for Change’
Sarah Strange, the individual candidate on the ticket and the current Environmental Officer, continues her focus on sustainability, with policies such as introducing food waste bins to the BKSS. However, she’s also focused on other areas, such as changing policy to make it mandatory for ANUSA Executives to engage with Department campaigns, as well as providing voluntary advocacy training to Department officers.
Which Students Are Running?
The ‘ANUSA 2025 Elections Candidate List’ refers to a position with only a single candidate as automatically ‘Elected Unopposed.’ On this basis, Observer refers to these positions as ‘elected unopposed’.
